Reviews: Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Kanye West, to me, has always been a hit-and-miss MC – I find his rhymes to be occasionally brilliant, rarely awful, and usually serviceable enough to provide the comforting sound of someone rapping over the music. So why listen? Because it’s the music that sets Mr. West apart from his contemporaries. As much as he’d like to be Biggie, he’s a producer first and foremost. Over the past decade, he’s at his best when he allows the music (and, when they’re on, the MC) to shine. The question is, does the music live up to the promise of his past hits? Does he improve and innovate on the R&B staples that defined his earlier sound? Dare we to dream of a consistently excellent flow?

My beautiful twisted dark fantasy

The very title of his latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, suggests a project of uncharacteristic ambition, even for the hip-hop jack-of-all-trades West. His previous effort, 808s and Heartbreak, was uneven and did not represent a fully developed command of electronic music. The work he put into that album, and his development of a singer not entirely reliant on rap, however, pay off in Fantasy. It’s a sprawling, virtuosic work, and represents the best pop music has to offer.

Composed of such disparate musicians as the folk vocal / guitar group Bon Iver, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Rihanna, and yes, Elton John, Kanye pulls out all the stops, both in tone and in genre. Minaj’s schizophrenic faux-British introduction sets the tone for a whirling catalog of gospel, soul, and traditional hip-hop.

Ironically, it’s the traditional hip-hop that stands out the least here. It has been claimed, for example, that ”Hell of a Life” is a “must listen,” but I find it to be merely serviceable. Tracks such as that and “Gorgeous” are good enough, but what West has to offer on the more innovative genre-benders such as the pop anthem “All of the Lights,” and “Monster” are much newer to the palate. “Monster” is a fresh, original track, highlighted by Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj’s takes. Minaj more on this track than ever before proves she’s more than simply a hot twitter queen: her rhymes are made even more ridiculous by the unpredictable, delightful, and sometimes disturbing way she switches personae and accents without warning. The song is also indicative of the refreshing choice Kanye’s made to take down the frequency of his MCing. It’s much easier to appreciate his rhymes that way.

My personal favorite was the last full track, “Lost in the World.” Complete with a remixed, beat-laden Imogen Heap-esque harmony throughout, it is a masterpiece of the combined genre. At its core it is old-school gospel, but it is also modern, through and through. The same can be said about My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Most of it is pop, yes, but a lot of it is awesome pop, and if there were more of that, we’d have less to complain about.
